Auto Immune Summit: Notes from David Perlmutter, MD

In November of 2014, I attended the AutoImmune Summit that was brought to you by Dr. Amy Myers. In this week long session, multiple specialists, doctors, and top notch doctors in the field of functional medicine addressed multiple topics related to autoimmunity, our bodies, and natural world around us. Each doctor discussed their specialty, and gave tips, tricks and suggestions for people seeking out a more natural cure to their ailments.
The following notes, tips, tricks and suggestions were made by Dr. Perlmutter during his segment with Dr. Amy Myers. Dr. Perlmutter is also an author, writing “Grain Brain” a cookbook. Notes from Dr. Perlmutter:
*Your gut & brain communicate more than you know. Your gut is your “main brain.” Genetic predisposition, and lifestyle choices (foods) lead to broken gut.
*Alzheimer’s and ALS has been proven to be related to inflammatory foods, and precursors.
*Leaky gut can cause depression, and serious body changes.
*NSAIDs given for inflammation only cause further internal damage, and does not fix the inflammation problem.
*Mothers can infect their newborns during vaginal delivery with bad gut bacteria. On the flip side, a non-natural birth (like c-section) can increase the risk of serious autoimmune disease and Celiac disease by 80%.
*Antibiotics by prescriptions, and those now found in meats and foods can destroy the natural stomach lining, and cause future stomach issues.
*Breastfeeding DOES matter for the first 6 weeks of life. This helps build the healthy gut bacteria needed for proper development.
*Fecal transplants do work! With a 92% effect rate, this newer and upcoming procedure will be more widely known soon. Check the journal of Gastrointerology for details.
*C-diff bacteria is deadly. In the gut, it causes alterations in the makeup of the body. If left, C-diff can spread. In most healthy individuals, c-diff is common, and kept in check by a working gut.
*High carb diets, secondary fats, glyodin (in gluten) causes increased gut permeability and leaking.
*Inflammation Causes: Cancer, Autoimmune diseases, Lupus, heart disease, depression, psychosis, and more.
*Food ingested speaks to your DNA, instructs your genome, and controls how your body handles what you’ve eaten.
*Eat a fiber rich, low carb, natural probiotic diet. Pasturized eggs are preferred.
Top Three Tips:
- Focus on restoring your gut.
- Try probiotics. (be cautious, as many were just found to contain gluten)
- Try fermented foods. Kimchi, pickled foods, greek yogurt, onions, leeks or garlic.
