She turned down the darkened alley knowing it wasn’t the best choice, but the fastest way to home. Tonight the alley seemed darker, and she wondered if she had made a bad decision when she made the turn. Maybe the extra mile wouldn’t of hurt her as much as she suspected this was going to.

Each dark object she came upon made her hold her breath. Her eyes darted around, now feeling the all too familiar skin tingle- which always meant someone was watching. Her breath quickened. Pulse raced. Her heart beat into her ears, and her hands went numb.

She knew he was there. Somewhere. Her stride lengthened, and her fast walk now turned into a jog. Suddenly, the sounds of crashing piles of old boxes and trash knocked over behind her. She knew he was coming for her.

Now running, she could hear two sets of feet hitting the pavement. He was running. She pushed herself to go at full force. This was it. Life or death. Remembering the way her was with her years before- she sobbed. Remembering how long it took to try and forget it all- tears poured from her eyes. Remembering his undying, life changing promises- she could feel herself weakening.

His presence was closer than ever to her, and she could feel him. The distance was down to feet, but she could not turn around to look. The end of the alley was coming quickly. She raced, and hoped it wasn’t real.

His hands came crashing down on her shoulder, and a noise of anger escaped his lips. She gritted her teeth together, and ran through the alley’s opening, and out into the middle of the street. People walking the streets stopped and glanced at her, thinking she was losing her mind- until they saw him.

Mascara and tears ran down her bright red cheeks. Nerves were palpable in the air, as no one knew what to do. Finally looking over her shoulder, to confirm what she already knew, she first noticed his smile. Still the same after all these years. That smile flashed through hundreds of memories, plans, dates, events- so much of her life.

Her chest burned with exhaustion and emotion. “Not again,” she thought. “Not. Again.” She repeated, as if talking herself into this newly thought truth. Suddenly, someone screamed to her to move, and she jumped to the side. The car struck him at full speed, throwing his flailing body dozens of feet away. She watched his body bounce off of the pavement.

Falling to the ground, she had nothing left. Sobs escaped her lips, as the end of her lifetime nightmare played out before her eyes. Her tears weren’t from hurt, but pain. See, he’d made her many promises. He’d promised her that even in his death, she was still his. Sobs turned to screams, and as she stood to run away, she felt the hands on her shoulders push her back down. ~
